Available Capacity

What is the purpose of the capacity map?

The map showing the available capacity for new connections is being published in terms of Article 57(3) of Regulation (EU) 2019/943. The figures for available capacity provide an estimate of the available capacity in the distribution network at the low voltage level at each locality shown. The figures shown are not to be interpreted as a commitment by Enemalta, and Enemalta cannot accept any responsibility for any consequence or loss which may arise from reliance on the related information. Any network connection capacity request will be evaluated in accordance with the Electricity Connection and Supply Regulations, which may include a grid study.  The figures provided do not take into account current grid reinforcement works. The map is updated quarterly.

What the figures in the map show

By zooming in on each substation, one can see the available spare transformer kVA capacity, at the specific substation and the RES available capacity in kWp. The transformer spare capacity is calculated by considering the existing transformer rating and the maximum historical demand recorded on the same transformer. The figures for the additional capacity available for RES installations is determined by considering the transformer spare capacity, the installed RES  capacity as well as grid voltage stability criteria.

How to interpret the figures shown in the map

The figures on the map show the possible capacity that may be connected.  If at a specific location the figures show that there is currently insufficient available capacity, the local distribution network would first have to be reinforced. It is to be noted that the maps do not show capacity constraints that may or could exist in other parts of the distribution network arising from the requested connection capacity.   These constraints may necessitate additional reinforcement.
