Power failue to parts of Naxxar and Mosta on Saturday 19th February 2005
21/02/2005

Enemalta would like to inform the general public of the circumstances which led to the power failure to parts of Naxxar and Mosta on Saturday 19th February while the Malta Song for Europe Festival was in progress.

Enemalta has four sources which supply electricity to the areas which were affected.

On the 19th January 2005 one of these sources which consists of a high voltage cable in the Telgha t’Alla w Ommu suffered a fault and Enemalta was not issued with a permit from ADT to repair it.  The reason given was that the road in question was recently resurfaced.

On the other hand ADT failed to provide a culvert in which an alternative cable could have been installed as was agreed before the fault occurred.  Apart from this todate this culvert has still not been completed by ADT leaving Enemalta short of a vital source of alternative supply to parts of Naxxar and Mosta.

On the 19th February, another cable circuit from the remaining three in service suffered a fault which, after investigations, was found to result from damage to the cable by a contractor who was working on a new road near Mosta Technopark along the main road leading from Technopark to Naxxar.  The cable in question was in fact damaged earlier but failed on Saturday around noon when the area became flooded with water.  Enemalta was not informed that the cable had been damaged.

This left Enemalta with only two available sources to supply these parts of Mosta and Naxxar at a time when demand was at its peak.

It resulted that in the evening these two sources alone could not cater for the demand and Enemalta had to monitor them continually and shed load accordingly to avoid overloading them and causing widespread blackouts.

Hence while Enemalta wants to apologise to the public in general for the inconvience, Enemalta feels that it wanted to highlight the facts so that the public can decide for itself who was really responsible for the interruptions in supply.
